title: "Feature edit controls"
description: "Look up the feature edit actions in a vector popup, plus the controls in the attribute and geometry editors and who can use them."
---

Use this page to check the feature-edit actions available in a vector feature's popup.

## Availability

The actions require:

- A signed-in user.
- Permission to edit features in the dataset.
- A vector feature with an enabled popup.

Raster and WMS layers do not provide feature-edit actions.

## Popup menu

| Action | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| `Edit attributes` | Opens the attribute form for the selected feature. |
| `Edit geometry` | Opens geometry handles for the selected feature. |
| `Add feature` | Starts a new feature in the selected feature's dataset. The dataset's geometry type sets the drawing type. |
| `Delete feature` | Opens a confirmation dialog. `Delete` removes the feature permanently; `Cancel` keeps it. |

The menu also lists `Edit data access` for users who can change the dataset's access: the dataset's creator, the account Owner, and an `Admin` in a group with `Edit` on the dataset. It opens the dataset's `Access` settings in a new tab, so the map stays open. See [How to configure dataset access](/docs/dataset-access/configure-dataset-access).

The menu lists `Share` and `Bookmark` only when the map's Share and bookmark tool is on. See [How to enable Share and bookmark on a map](/docs/map-extensions/enable-share-and-bookmark).

## Attribute editor

| Control | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| Attribute inputs | Edit text, number, date, and date-and-time values. |
| `Save changes` | Saves your changes to the dataset. |
| `Cancel` | Closes the editor without saving. |

## Geometry editor

| Geometry | Controls |
| --- | --- |
| Point / one-point multipoint | A draggable marker. For a one-point multipoint (every point from an imported file), the panel shows the line and polygon instructions |
| Line / one-part multiline | Draggable vertices; click a midpoint to insert a vertex; right-click a vertex to remove it |
| Polygon / one-part multipolygon, no holes | Draggable vertices; click a midpoint to insert a vertex; right-click a vertex to remove it |

A vertex is removed only when the shape stays valid. While the geometry editor is open, right-click doesn't open the map's context menu.

| Action | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| `Save changes` | Writes the edited geometry to the dataset. Requires a changed coordinate. |
| `Cancel` | Removes the editing overlay without saving. |

The editor does not open for a feature it cannot edit whole. A message appears instead:

| Message | Cause |
| --- | --- |
| `Editing multipart features or polygons with holes is not supported safely` | The feature has more than one part, or a polygon has a hole. |
| `Exact geometry could not be loaded` | The feature's shape did not load. |
| `This feature is too large to edit safely` | The shape has more than 30,000 vertices, or is more than 1 MB of data. |

<!-- TODO: product - For a point from an imported file (a one-point MultiPoint), the Edit Geometry panel shows the line and polygon instructions ("Drag a vertex to move it. Click a midpoint to insert a new vertex. Right-click a vertex to remove it..."), because getInstructionText has no multipoint case and falls to the default (../mangomap packages/mangomap-ui/src/components/tool-panel/tools/popup/editing/edit-geometry-content.tsx:31-45). Plain points show "Drag the marker to move the point." When multipoint gets the point text, update the Point row. See v4-sample-data/DOCS-CAPTURE-COVERAGE.md, "Product issues". -->

## Add-feature editor

| Control | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| Map drawing | Draws one point, line, or polygon. The layer's dataset sets the geometry type. |
| `Clear` | Removes the drawn geometry and returns to drawing mode. |
| Attribute inputs | Set values for the new feature. Internal ID and geometry fields are excluded. |
| `Save feature` | Enabled after geometry is complete; creates the feature. |
| `Cancel` | Discards the drawing and values. |

## Delete behavior

Selecting `Delete feature` opens a confirmation dialog that names the feature and says the deletion affects every map that uses the dataset and cannot be undone. `Delete` starts the deletion; `Cancel` closes the dialog. Success closes the popup.

## Data scope

All four actions update the source dataset. Changes are visible to every map using that dataset.
